A quick 3 night trip to Rome has been on the cards for a while. My third trip to the Italian capital and Jason’s first. Arriving at the airport we headed to the information desk to buy a 72 hr Roma pass. It gives you free access to public transport for that period of time. Two free entries into museums and discounts on others. This doesn’t include from the airport though. We were going to catch a taxi at €50 each way when the lady suggested we catch the SIT shuttle at €15 return each, you cant beat that. We were staying out from the centre in the district of Aurelia. Our stop the first, about 30 mins from the airport. The driver passing the hotel, im suddenly asking him. When does he stop. Cornelia is his answer, about a 1.5km walk to the hotel. Right next to the metro we now knew where we needed to go on saturday morning. Walking in the dark it started to rain and 400 meters from our hotel we stopped in a pizza restaurant, bags and starving we were greeted and shown into the back of the restaurant. We enjoyed a fab meal of napolatana pizza, seafood linguine, dessert, beer & wine, finished off with free limoncello for €49. So good was the food, we ate here every night after.
Saturday morning, we were up early and headed down for breakfast. You cant’ beat £2 per person for all you can eat continental breakfast. Pastries, coffee, meats and cheese, yogurt and cereal. Setting off on our walk to the metro, it was good to orientate ourselves in daylight. The metro was super easy, on line A we we got off at Spagna ( the spanish steps). Taking a few photos we then carried on to the trevi fountain and my favourite piazza, Piazza Navona and its stunning fountains. Today was to be the day of 35,000 steps. We used our free museum passes at the Capital museums and the mueso di Traiano. The lady at the airport info advised seeing these two as the history from these two would help us with visiting the Colosseum and Roman forum. With time left in the afternoon we visited the Pantheon, holding the tomb of the famous Raphel and with its open dome roof. We sat and watched people, taking in the amazing structure. The temperature in Rome a nice 17 degrees, we walked along the river towards the Vatican before entering Castel Saint Angelo. Returning on the metro, which is honestly so easy to navigate we headed back to our favourite restaurant. Both of us ordering a different pizza we enjoyed another fab meal followed by coffee to finish.
