We had booked online, a skip the queue pass for the Colosseum, getting there really early as the day was starting to heat up. We joined the queue for the security checks. Easy to navigate we entered the Colosseum at our allocated time. Having been into a smaller version in Verona, this definitely has the wow factor. Standing upstairs looking down it is huge and commanding. The sheer height and depth, in the height of its day would have been terrifying. You can pay extra to go down below. But it has to be on a tour. We wandered around and then headed into the nearby Palatine hill and Roman Forum. Both included in our skip the line pass. If you are in Rome we highly recommend you do this, and book a vatican tour. Otherwise you will stand outside waiting for hours, just to buy a ticket. Palatine hill is vast and there is so much to see. Some great views look down onto the Forum and you catch glimpses of the Colosseum. The forum is massive, the largest ancient public square in Rome in the day. It’s amazing what is still standing today. The day before we could see into it from the Mercadi di Traiano museum, wondering what it was. After exiting the forum we made it to the statues of Julius Cesar. Rows of them on either side of the public walkway. A collection of street musicians playing and performing. Great music and even Michael Jackson impersonators. We had been trying to book Vatican tour tickets and finally had booked a tour. So we headed back to the hotel before once again heading out to dinner. The food here is amazing we found Suppli which is the Roman version of Arancini. Just as good, you know a place has good food when the queue spills out onto the street.
