We are currently parked up, in the countryside at a very rural aire. 18km from Zagreb it’s served as a good base with a shuttle bus in today. Tuesday we were in Slunj on one side of the river and with Rastoke on the other. Rastoke known for its wooden houses and watermills set on the river. The tales and legends of fairies known in the area. It really was picturesque and a great start to a day, by walking along the river town.
The drive from there was to a campsite just out of Duga Resa a top rated campsite by a river. We were parked up with our Aussie friends Peter and Lynne. Who we have been with for about a week. They have headed to Slovenia and we miss them and Marco their Hymer. We drove onto the outskirts of Zagreb, a very slow journey due to the quality of the road and 40-50km hour speed limits. The bonus you don’t use much fuel. Today we had the father in law, a taxi driver drive us into Zagreb. I’m glad he did, it is one busy place with loads of one way streets. He dropped us off and we agreed on 5pm to pick us up. I must admit he is a fast driver and slammed on his brakes as a dog walked into the road, launching sleeping George off the back seat onto the floor. Poor George i couldnt stop laughing at the shock it gave him. Zagreb is huge and the buildings amazing. The architecture carved into nearly every building. The cathedral, huge and under renovation. Stemming back to the earthquake of 1880, repairs and redesign by the architect Herman Bolle still present today. The virgin Mary with her angels in gold in a fountain sit in front. Nuns passing by, we headed into the old town and in 7.5hrs managed to cover most of the Upper and Lower towns. Stopping for lunch, I had Goulash soup with dumplings. Jason had a beef soup, salad, snitzel and pancakes for €6. We walked through St Marks Square and the famous St Marks Church and its famous roof. Trams are everywhere, the most we have ever seen in a city. Building impressive and you turn a corner and there is another even more impressive. Its a great city to visit and worth a couple of days. Soaking up the cafe culture, a mix of the modern and the historic. Tomorrow Hungary and the lake area for a couple of days to recover from the price hit of the day tours we have done. Worth every penny though……
