Tuesday we decided to stop in Wangen. Wangen translates as cheeks. After the coat of arms with its three left facing beardless mens heads. It also contains a black demi eagle and blue fluer-de-lis. Parked up at a stellplatz on the edge of the old town. Next to a river and several churches. Snow piled up on the grass verges, there is even an ice ring here. We paid at the information centre, served by a lovely german girl with elfin features. We asked about the sights and she said there was a famous bakery in town. This is another town with many spectacular entrance gates. As you follow the marked route on the map, you pass many statues and figure fountains. I loved these so set about taking several pictures of them. My favorite was St Anthony’s fountain after the patron saint of domestic animals. It’s also situated where the pig market used to be. Germany is full of these gorgeous towns and we can’t get enough of the decor. Set up for motorhomers to visit, why wouldn’t you stop in these places. We have decided to head towards Lindau tomorrow and along the lake heading into the black forest.
Lindau
Wednesday we visited the lake side towns of Lindau and Meersberg. We parked at a car park suitable for motorhomes in Lindau. Paying for 3 hours, we walked to Lindau Island. Situated on Lake Bodensee. On the far side switzerland and the swiss alps. The view from here is breathtaking. I can’t get over snow-capped mountains, with the calmness of the lake in front. We walked out to the island and along the lakeside. Before entering the old town. All the towns round here are so beautiful. Baton style wooden houses and painted town squares. We walked out to the marina. The water is surprisingly green and clear. You can see the bottom easily. As we walked the front, a lighthouse and Lion statue guard the harbour entrance.
Meersberg
Meersberg, seeing this had a castle we decided, why not. A further 40 minutes along the lake we drove through the town of Friedrichsafen to Stretton. Parked at a restaurant for the night with about 8 other campers. We overlook fields and its very peaceful. The walk to Meersberg from here about 5km return. The walk along the bike path, high above the town. Looking down over vineyards, we headed down into the old town. Through a gate way into the town we walked the streets, trees and vines clinging to the sides of buildings. Looking down from the old town you can see the lake and the slanted roofs of the historic buildings. The castle sits up above, and cobbled streets head down to the harbour. Windows with dolls houses and the most delicate dolls house furniture including crockery and toilets. On the harbour another stunning statue at the end of the pier. The lake again calm and tranquil. people line the streets in many of the lake side restaurants. Taking in the nice view and the warm day. The height of summer here would be crazy i imagine. As im sitting here, i can see a stork in its nest about 100 metres away. High up and surveying the lands below. Tomorrow we head to the black forest area, heading north now. We are heading towards Strasbourg and Colmar in France before heading up into Belgium. Sorry there is no photos our internet coverage is pretty bad, so i will add some when I can.
